My Ancestral house

My first blog I wanted to start with something special for me. Like any other Indian, Ancestral house is of pride for me. It stands there in a small village i kerala near the river "Bharathapuzha" with hundred and more years of ancestry shouldered on it.
It is a small village full of hills. One has to walk many ups and downs while walking through the village side.Proudly flows the river bharathapuzha near it swollen in rainy season and lean in summer. Many stories are there of the river swollen unexpectedly with sudden rains. Long back when there was no dam across it monsoon rains was a terror for those living in the banks of this river. You dont know when the river will overflow as the rain in hills will make it ferocious. With those water will come huge trees uprooted from forests. It may flow through the middle of the stream or may come to the banks at times.People in the nearby will try to get it.I have heard my grandma narrating that the huge wood work of our house is with the trees collected by our ancestors.
Masonary of the house is of some special combination of sap of a wood with clay and calsium oxide. It is still strong for the two storied structure it is holding. Of cource wear and tear and non maintanance has its toll on it.
The "Nalukettu" with all its grandeur in the middle of an area full of big trees gives it a serene look. The real hot condition outside will have no effect in the interioir as the ventilation and climatic conditions are well regulated The interior with the central open area called "nadumuttam" and the four sides with rooms for special purposes speaks the engineering skills of a generation gone.Special rooms are provided for various purposes. The stony path from the backyard leads to the river. Nearby is the temple of the family deity.
Of course time has changed a lot in the village and nearby area. But nothing is changed with regard to our house.Construction of the dam across the river did change its face. But nothing has changed its grandeur.
I am nostalgic of my small village and big house.
